ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses air transport safety because of the paramount importance of safety in all aspects of air transport operation. US operators do a preponderance of jet air transport flying, and the US record has always been better than the non-US record if all non-US airlines are considered in one category. The continued improvement of the regional airlines' safety performance will undoubtedly be reinforced by a recent action of the Federal Aviation Administration. Walter Coleman, Regional Airlines Association President, in replying to a critic who stated that regional and commuter airlines are less safe to fly than the majors stated: was not supported by the facts. The European Regional Airlines Association says that concerns in the US about commuter safety are not relevant in Europe. In 1995, regional airlines operated 2,138 aircraft. Forty-six of its top regional carriers had code sharing agreements with major airlines and they carried 96% of the industry's passengers.
