ABSTRACT

Aviation as a worldwide industry has grown tremendously in the last two decades. Unfortunately, there has not been a significant reduction in either the total number of accidents or in the total number of fatalities. In the future, if the industry's own growth projections are realized and the safety rate is not improved, the number of accidents and the number of fatalities will be unacceptable. For many years the air transport industry has tried to deal effectively with the 'most pressing—and depressing—matter' of aircraft accidents. Human factors are now very much a part of any good accident or incident investigation. The other areas that the Federal Aviation Administration will emphasize are controlled flight into terrain accidents, loss of control accidents, and landing and approach accidents. International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is the most important of the international aviation organizations. ICAO's four- to five-day Global Symposiums are part of a ten-year ICAO Flight Safety and Human Factors program.
