ABSTRACT

Flight deck documentation ranges from large manuals, checklists, operational data cards, and flight operations bulletins to maps, charts, and approach plates. The typographical quality and the consistency of document terminology are significant issues in all types of documents. Flight manuals and operational bulletins are all important communications media. They should be useful documents that reflect the character and operating philosophy of the airline and reflect the airline's operational procedures and its training. At least some of the documentation material that is in various manuals are available in advanced technology airplanes via the flight management computers and control display units that are part of the overall Flight Management System. Checklists are also operational documentation and a part of procedures. Checklists have expanded over the years, with items being added in response to everything from operational system changes and improvements to passenger concerns and considerations of potential liability. The management of operational information involves more than just communication with the cockpit crew.
