ABSTRACT

Ernst began a tour of Holland in late November 1838, and sent a number of letters to his publisher Maurice Schlesinger, who also owned the influential Revue et Gazettemusicale. There was some thought that Ernst would make a tour to St Petersburg, and it was hoped that he would play in Hamburg on the way. However, as the earlier note to Schlesinger shows, he had already decided on a tour of Germany. Ernst's first appearance in Germany was in Hanover where he had been invited by the composer and court Kapellmeister, Heinrich Marschner. From Vienna, Ernst returned to Brunn, and then set out to Pesth and Pressburg. Hungary was part of the Austrian Empire and entirely under the thumb of Vienna. Ernst announced his concerts, and Joachim persuaded his parents to let him stay long enough in Vienna to hear a violinist that the whole musical world was talking about.
