ABSTRACT

Television is used to connect the local classroom with the teacher and students to learners at a distance. Distance learning is viewed by the US military as a cost-efficient way to deliver technical training to a large number of soldiers. Distance education has been applied to a variety of programs serving numerous audiences via a wide variety of media. There is an ongoing debate about whether distance learning is inherently better than classroom-based instruction. The effectiveness of distance learning in the military was investigated by W. J. Bramble and B. L. Martin. The satisfaction of the distance student is an important factor related to success in interactive distance courses. Faced with constant modifications to existing laws, limited personnel, and shrinking budgets, police departments nationwide are looking to distance education as one possible solution to a training problem. Much of the research in distance education is of the media comparison type.
