ABSTRACT

Enough has been said and written about Mendelssohn’s association with Leipzig, and although, as a former conductor of the Gewandhaus orchestra, I am one of his successors, I shall not concern myself with that subject here. Nor was it the reason, or the only reason, why I particularly welcomed the invitation to share in these centennial celebrations. There are more profound causes to recall today what Mendelssohn was and what he achieved.
