ABSTRACT
The Ring des Nibelungen has always been Wagner’s most controversial work. On the one hand it never achieved the popularity of his early works, on the other it was never able to win the approval of musicians to the extent of Tristan und Isolde or Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. All opposition to Wagner was from the outset directed primarily at the Ring.
