ABSTRACT

Literature on the Chinese Jews has been covered remarkably well bibliographically. And considering that the well-known bibliographer Frank Joseph Shulman is preparing another extensive bibliography on the subject, and that Donald D. Leslie already published one, there should not be too many wishes left open. Das Ausland was one of the outstanding journals by the publisher Johann Friedrich Cotta, and while it was designed to be of popular appeal, this "Daily for the knowledge of the spiritual and moral life of peoples" did not shy from using Greek and Hebrew type; Julius Klaproth and Karl Friedrich Neumann belonged to its contributors, to name just a few. The Ausland carried many articles without authors' names, and in this case the publisher may have easily dispensed with giving the name of somebody who was probably still under police surveillance.
