ABSTRACT

This chapter considers behavioural crime linking, that is the predicting of the home location of an offender on the basis of the locations where he or she has committed offences and any behavioural features associated with these crime scenes. Predicting the characteristics of an offender is a central aim in offender profiling. Crime linking refers to identifying offences that have been committed by the same offender from among a number of offences. If one wants to come up with a more precise point-prediction of the location of an offender's home it is possible to calculate a number of measures of central tendency for a particular distribution of crime locations. As with crime linking, research into geographical profiling has also only looked at series consisting of one crime type at a time. One of the challenges for all of the types of offender profiling is the quality of the behavioural information available.
