ABSTRACT

The most obvious form of protection afforded by clothes is that against cold. Indeed, in a cold climate, there is considerable risk that it might be taken to be the only one. But clothing can protect not only against uncomfortably low temperature, but also against heat, in so far as this is due to the direct rays of the sun. Clothes can us protect against enemies, both human and animal. The desire for protection against human enemies has led to the development of quite a special kind of clothing, known as armour. The gradual disappearance of armour was doubtless due to the improvements in fire-arms, which eventually made it useless for its real purpose. Apart from regular warfare, armour or other special forms of protective clothing may, of course, protect against sudden or isolated attacks from fellow human beings. The protective function of clothes might seem at first sight to be simple enough.
