ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three different ways of conceptualizing the human body to better understand the antecedents, outcomes, mechanisms, processes, and indicators of positive organizational relationships. It focuses on these three lenses to convey that each brings a particular aspect of the body. The first lens focuses on the physiology of positive organizational relationships, highlighting the powerful physiological responses of the body to social relationships. It provides reader with important insights into relationship processes, such as trust building, recovery from conflict, and emotional contagion. The second lens draws attention to our own subjective, visceral experiences of our bodies. Bodily cues, such as feelings of energy and exhaustion, often remain in the background, while at other times they jump to the foreground as critical signals. Finally, the third lens turns toward the cultural meaning of bodies. The physiology lens helps reader unpack relationship processes, such as conflict, and outcomes, such as physical health.
