ABSTRACT

Research is being conducted by the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (UK) to examine the influence of the spatial environment and technology on military Command and Control (C2) teams. The research aims to establish whether performance levels for distributed teams would be equivalent to colocated teams. Also under investigation is the role that technology might play in supporting team tasks. This paper reports an investigation into the location of team members, the media for team interaction, and the task undertaken by the team. This begins with a review of the literature, followed by an empirical investigation in the laboratory, and finally an interpretation of the empirical findings with recommendations for future research.
