ABSTRACT

Design engineers concerned with developing information and control systems often pay scant attention to human information requirements. Their main concern is to ensure that automation is appropriately configured and that alarms are installed to

draw attention to critica! parameters that could place plant and personnel at risk. Some instrumentation is provided to operators because it seems helpful but this is rarely done on the basis of a rigorous analysis of needs. This design strategy often results in an interface that can be used, but problems are also frequently observed.
