ABSTRACT

The attainable accuracy and dependency of modern aircraft is quite superior to that of older technologies, but solving one problem often creates new and unexpected flaws in the modified or new design. Time pressure can hurry the crews and increase the likelihood of human errors when ‘instructing’ the aircraft. The modern aircraft clearly are less noisy and technologies are still improving, so a main problem will be to accommodate the traffic as the absolute number of flights will increase. The progression in air traffic control is generally considered to have fallen behind the state of the art of modern aircraft and major improvements are needed. Datalink communication can involve computer-computer interfacing as well as air-ground human operator communications. Pilot can request route changes, ask for information etc. while the controller can detect possible conflicts in the future and provide the aircraft with instructions.
