ABSTRACT
The object of this chapter is to analyse the critical importance of employment in the wider context of the world economy. It might be somewhat different from the conventional discourse and the usual debate on the subject. For one, it seeks to focus on the macroeconomic aspects of employment rather than the microeconomic concerns about the world of work. For another, it considers employment not only in developing countries, but also in industrialized countries.
