ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the term NGOs to discuss the internationalization of the nonprofit sector. It provides an overview of some of the important aspects of the internationalization of this sector, including conceptualization, growth, roles, differences and similarities across selective countries, and some of the recent issues related to their operations. The chapter discusses the comprehend NGOs as a subsector of the non-profit sector and aims to understand the growth and scope of NGOs. It identifies the similarities and differences of NGOs across regions and analyzes the structure and operations of international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs). The chapter explores the major roles of NGOs and also discusses several major issues affecting the nonprofit sector at the international level. It also analyses a case study that focuses on the security issue of NGO staff working in conflict regions. NGOs in Algeria, for example, operate under very restrictive laws.
