ABSTRACT

There has been a steady rise in motorcycle ownership over recent years (RoSPA, 2001) and, according to Mintel, even though the market is slowing down from the rapid growth it experienced at the end of the twentieth century, it still remains buoyant with 166,000 new bike sales forecast for 2005. The growth capability for the market is high, with the potential pool of new riders being eleven percent of the UK adult population, around 5,400,000 (Mintel, 2004). Currently not much is known about the levels of motorcycling within the UK (RoSPA, 2001) but it is believed that country-wide around two percent, or 1,000,000, of adults own a PTW and that these bikes account for about one percent of total annual mileage.
