ABSTRACT

It is a well-known fact within traffic research that driver accident liability changes (mainly downwards) with age (see for example Evans, 1991, for detailed calculations; Brezina, 1969). On the other hand, it is also known that exposure has a positive association with number of accidents (for a discussion of the concept of exposure, see Chapman, 1973). Furthermore, experience is generally expected to have a negative association with accident frequency (although the absolute number is probably positively related to experience), as found by, for example, Lynn and Lockwood (1998) and Maycock, Lockwood and Lester (1991). However, these two concepts can be seen as two different variants of the same thing, the contact with traffic. Whether it is called exposure or experience depends on the time frame used.
