ABSTRACT

The ‘older driver problem’ has concerned road safety experts for decades. The reasons for this concern can be understood by simple demographics. As American society ages, the proportion of older drivers on the roads has increased, and this trend is growing. The sixty-five and older age group, which numbered 33,500,000 in 1995, is estimated to exceed 50,000,000 by 2020 (Staplin, Lococo and Byington, 1997). In addition, as older adults remain healthy later into life, more older individuals continue to drive longer.
