ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses in depth the major categories where people experience the worst discrimination means that the totality of discrimination is also separated into categories. It attempts to give the reader an idea of some of the many other areas in addition to institutional settings, higher education, insurance, disability services, and medical care in which people with face discrimination. One particularly good reason to do surveys on the impact of discrimination on people with psychiatric disabilities is that the surveys illuminate some of the forms of discrimination that usually remain hidden and undiscussed: they are not the subjects of litigation, because the discriminators are insulated by law. A variety of forms of housing discrimination emerged from the survey results, spanning all class and income levels. More affluent respondents reported the inability to obtain loans for mortgages or to rent expensive apartments.
