ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the commercialization of erotic dancing has been marked by the 'gentrification' of nightlife in which lap-dancing clubs have increasingly become marketed as 'entertainment' venues and 'gentleman's clubs' rather than 'sex' establishments. It also discusses the way in which lap-dancing clubs have become an important part of the night-time leisure economy in the UK. The chapter examines how chain-operated gentlemen's clubs, such as For Your Eyes Only and Spearmint Rhino, are at the forefront of the proliferation of the lap-dancing industry. It focuses on the recent changes from the licensing of lap-dancing clubs under the Licensing Act 2003 to 'sexual entertainment venues' as outlined in the Policing and Crime Act 2009. The chapter specifically sets the scene for Starlets as a chain-operated lap-dancing club. It highlights the economic, cultural and political factors which relate to this club is important as each influences the nature of the business and the rules which govern the conduct of dancers.
