ABSTRACT

Music educators generally agree on the importance and value of a multicultural approach to music instruction in the general music classroom. Multicultural music education in its broadest sense refers to an approach to teaching and learning that incorporates the music of various cultures and ethnic groups along with the study of the history customs, and social issues. In preparation for teaching multicultural music the teacher must approach instruction with respect for the music and sensitivity to the people of the culture. The teachers should be aware of the tendency to expose students to too many cultures within a limited period of time. Music instruction must be accompanied by accuracy, integrity, authenticity, and attention to issues related to the group. With repeated exposure and active participation in the music, students will gradually acquire a greater appreciation and possibly a preference for the once unfamiliar music.
