ABSTRACT
On this and the following pages will be found brief descriptions and photographs (not included) of a number of the latest locomotives and most modern carriage and wagon stock specially designed for service in various parts of Africa. In selecting our illustrations we have endeavoured to give as representative a view as possible of the latest practice in the design of locomotives and rolling stock for African railways, and we are indebted to the various railway administrations, locomotive and rolling stock builders and consulting engineers for the following descriptions and illustrations. In order to avoid repetition we have not published more than one photograph of the same or very similar type of locomotive or rolling stock, and in mentioning the builder’s name under the illustration we wish it clearly understood that, of course, very similar locomotives and vehicles may also have been constructed by other builders, but were we to illustrate each one it would only have the effect of making this number monotonous without adding to its value.
