ABSTRACT

Owing to the fact that the Southern Rhodesian portion forms an integral part of the whole, and to the fact that the other portions have in return an important bearing on Southern Rhodesia, it has been necessary to view the system as a whole in its relation to this Colony, only differentiation between the various companies when it becomes necessary for financial or other reasons. The control of the whole system, with the exception of the Blinkwater Railway and the Rhodesia-Katanga Junction Railway and Mining Company, is in the hands of the British South Africa Company. The control of the whole system by the British South Africa Company has simplified the question of management. The Mashonaland Railway Company is the managing company for the whole system, except the Vryburg-Bulawayo section. Under the Treaty between the Portuguese and the British Governments, the Portuguese Government agreed to construct a railway line between Pungwe and the British sphere, with docks, quays at Beira.
