Multiculturalism as it pertains to communication sciences and disorders has been investigated by numerous scholars. The African Americans are diverse with different history, culture, social class, and family roles and relationships. Spanish is the second most common language spoken in the United States. According to the 2007 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language spoken at home by over 34 million people aged 5 or older. The field of speech-language pathology has a critical shortage of bilingual service providers. Bilingual children who have speech and language disorders in one of their languages also have evidence of impairment in their other language.
