ABSTRACT

This chapter presents key issues of the macroeducation context of Hong Kong, and introduces the backgrounds and views about learning and teaching English of the teachers and students. In general, all the teacher participants gave the impression that they were operating under different degrees of practical constraints generated by the macroeducation system and learning culture prevalent in Hong Kong schools, for example, large class size, exam-oriented curriculum culture. The Medium of Instruction (MOI) policy of Hong Kong, whether old or new, has long been an object of public criticism. As a social and political system, the education system in Hong Kong has recently undergone significant transformations and metamorphoses. Students' views were sought with regard to their attitude toward learning and using English, their English-learning experience, and their learning strategies. As for the students, most of them interviewed were rather ambivalent in their attitudes toward their English teachers and learning English.
