ABSTRACT
The year 1861 was not very old before the entire outlook for Hallé’s Manchester concert project was transformed – and it had a great deal to do with his friends and supporters, and their involvement. In fact, their role in the events of 1861 constitutes a kind of prototype of the Hallé Concerts Society, as it ultimately became, after his death.
