ABSTRACT

Alain Souchon and Laurent Voulzy cemented their friendship and subsequent collaboration in the early 1970s around their shared admiration for the Beatles. Since they have constantly worked together, and although the division of labour is not the same, the model of the famous John Lennon and Paul McCartney team has obviously had a profound influence on them. Voulzy takes a less important role, and Souchon collaborates with David MacNeil, Louis Chedid and Michel Jonasz for the music of some of his songs, and the arrangements are more conventional than those of Voulzy. In 1993 Voulzy unusually issued a complete album, Cache derriere, with all tracks composed and arranged in his customary multi-track style and all lyrics by Souchon. The achievement of Souchon and Voulzy in their different musical styles has been to bring together the resources of pop music, the variety of styles and the resources of the electronic studio, with the poetic lyrics typical of chanson.
