ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's activity as a promoter of his own music during the last fifteen years of his life. It focuses on the some publications: one collection of songs; some choral works; some collections of keyboard trios; and the "Kenner und Liebhaber" collections for solo keyboard. In Hamburg, Bach was employed by the five main churches and the city, who likewise determined his income and responsibilities. And in Hamburg, Bach also took the opportunity to provide himself with a regular supplement to his salary by publishing his own music. Fortunately, a large number of documents relating to Bach's activity as a publisher of his own music in Hamburg has survived. Bach was constantly reminding his agents to get the names of their subscribers to him on time and the agents often did not come through before the publication date.
