ABSTRACT

Here are further extracts from R. Winstedt’s book on Malay industries (see also Volume 1). His descriptions of Malay boat building, mat/basket-making and pottery production clearly display the respect held by many Europeans towards the traditional Malay way-of-life and their insistence that it be protected from the ‘new economy’. Inevitably, all three sectors were damaged by the import of cheaper and better designed/quality goods from Europe, though all survived.
