ABSTRACT

Rice cultivation in Malaya has been and is maintained for the most part by the Malay population as a small holders' crop. In the Krian area, where conditions for cultivating rice are more favourable than elsewhere, there is a not inconsiderable section of cultivators of Chinese and Indian nationality. Padi lands in Malaya may be classified into three categories: large continuous areas in the coastal alluvial plain; smaller scattered areas in the inland districts comprising the bottoms of broad and narrow valleys in undulating country; alluvial lands situated on the banks of large rivers. Methods employed in rice cultivation very considerably according to the locality, the condition and the character of the land and the means of water supply. Many of the agricultural practices are uneconomic while the industry itself is underlain by a very large amount of tradition and superstition which tends to keep alive uneconomic practices.
