ABSTRACT

Excluding the capital value of small native holdings, which must be very considerable, it is computed that no less a sum that £150,000,000 sterling is invested in rubber companies owing estates in the Middle East. British Malaya supplies more than half of the world's requirements of cultivated rubber. There is much more general recognition of the damage done by rain in the form of "soil-wash" on hilly lands, and of the necessity for measures of soil preservation. Such measures may take the form of silt-pits, terraces or bunds. Seed selection and vegetative propagation have both received careful attention and much experimental work has been carried out by experienced planters aided by the scientific establishments related to the industry. The machines for dealing with the coagulated rubber have adjustable hardened steel rollers set in pairs horizontally, and vary in type according to the product desired.
