ABSTRACT

An enquiry into the nationality of owners of rubber estates in Malaya was instituted in 1931 and was completed for the Federated Malay States and Straits Settlements in the same year. The definition of ownership of public limited liability companies is explained in the course of this report. There are 2,301 estates in Malaya of 100 acres and over, of which 568 estates have each in area of 1000 acres or over. A total of 827 estates are owned by Public Limited Liability Companies, containing an area of 1,335,957 acres, equal to 71.4 per cent of the total planted area on estates of 100 acres and over, and 43 per cent. There are 1,430 privately owned estates, with a total of 470,018 acres planted, of which 360,804 acres have reached a tappable size. The total area of reserve land held by rubber estates in Malaya is 443,055 acres, or 14 per cent of the area already planted.
