ABSTRACT

A perfectly scientific classification of Malay methods of fishing would be very difficult to draw up. The fish-traps of the Malays are divided popularly into two classes, stakes or large traps which are conspicuous all along the shores of the West Coast, and traps proper such as are set in fresh inland waters. The fishing nets used in Malay waters may be divided roughly into floating or drift-nets, drag-nets, casting-nets, fixed purse-nets, ground or lift-nets and small hand-nets other than casting-nets worked by one man. Hook-and-line fishing is much developed among the Malays, and may be divided into: angling without a rod; / angling with rod; night-lines; and fishing with long lines of hooks. Pig and rats are commonly caught in a single noose hung concealed in a fence along their trail or run: and the noose is tightened round the victim's neck by impact, as he rushes into the aperture where it is hung.
