ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores Brazilian popular music informed by the diverse codes of performance that produce meaning in popular song. It attempts to shed light on how these codes function to produce the effects to which we as listeners respond. It is intended that this work may play a small part in the development of a line of study of popular music in Brazil underpinned by two key considerations. The first is an awareness of and sensitivity to the multidimensional nature of popular song; the second is a concern to elaborate methods for studying popular music that are mindful of the crucial questions of the enjoyment and pleasure of the listener. That Caetano Veloso has maintained an awareness of the mass appeal and of the entertainment function of popular music, while cultivating an intellectual approach to music-making, has brought him criticism.
