Vittore Branca, when considering the textual tradition of the Decameron in print, commented that: ‘sarebbe, se non inutile, certo ozioso e superf luo dare in questa sede l’elenco e la descrizione delle edizioni: non si farebbe che ripetere quanto già egregi studiosi hanno pubblicato e che proprio chi scrive ha avuto occasione di completare e aggiornare’.20 I have found it essential, however, to compile my own descriptions of editions of the Decameron, since published bibliographic descriptions do not cover all the areas of presentation discussed in Chapter 3. Unless otherwise stated, descriptions are based on exemplars I have seen.
