ABSTRACT
By the 1880s, the history of Protestant Bible translation had arrived at a point of ever-deepening division in the missionary community, especially between the British and American missionaries. The beginning of the Protestant mission in China was inseparable from the beginning of Chinese Bible translation. However, its foundations had already been laid by Catholic predecessors. The fact that Morrison was sent by the London Missionary Society specifically to translate the Bible into Chinese piqued the Baptist missionaries at Serampore, especially Marshman, who had already been engaged with Lassar on a Chinese translation of the Bible for some time. The New Testament translation by Medhurst/Gützlaff/Bridgman was a consequent attempt to translate into readable Chinese. The Delegates' Version was also unique among all the Chinese missionary translations of the Bible in that it was aided by a Chinese scholar of high repute.
