ABSTRACT
The translation of the Easy Wenli Union Version was considered by the majority to be the most important of the three projects, and it seemed indeed to be the most successful with the early completion of its New Testament (NT) translation. The procedures of translation were somewhat similar to both the Delegates' and Peking Versions. Missionaries from Hangzhou even demanded a continued printing of the old classical versions to counteract the shortcomings of the Easy Wenli NT. The great controversy over the lower classical translations of John and Burdon/Blodget gave the translators of the Easy Wenli Union Version an additional degree of liberty. Baptist missionaries and mission societies particularly requested that the Easy Wenli Union Version be published with their term for "baptism." Though the 1890 conference had required the Nanking Version as a model nobody seriously considered the use of this version in the process of the Union Version translation.
