ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book highlights potential paradigm shifts of various sorts: from conceptions of strength that stress physical might to those including psychological, social, and spiritual strength; from notions of security based upon national interests to human security, which stresses complex, interdependent wholes. It suggests that stigma in its myriad forms is better understood as one of many ways that humans manage terror. The book shows that civilian disengagement with the plight of service members and the campaigns they serve is dangerous. It presents terms with the post-9/11 wars and their effects on soldiers, families, and communities across the nation. The book provides readers to attend to the moral dimensions of suffering, healing, and the divisions within and between communities accentuated by war.
