ABSTRACT

Some blue-collar workers think their jobs will be saved by giving the North American Free Trade Agreement the ax. A North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) defeat will hurt Michigan - especially its auto, office-furniture and agriculture industries. According to the US Department of Commerce, Michigan has 254,000 jobs dependent on exports to Mexico and Canada -/the most of any state in the union. The anti-NAFTA camp would have us believe that US companies have no stake in their communities, that they are poised greedily at the southern border, waiting to leap across the moment the trade accord is signed. That simply is not true. Mexican workers are not as productive as US workers. And the transportation problems in that country do not make it an attractive investment site. The vehemence of the anti-NAFTA faction is interesting. Late last week, about 50 members of the House were undecided, more Democrats than Republicans.
