ABSTRACT

There are times when members of the US House are obligated to put the national interest ahead of all other interests which have a claim on their consideration. The vote Wednesday on the North American Free Trade Agreement is one of those times. The overall national interest in approving the trade pact is clear and compelling. The objections to it are on the margins and in narrow interests. It is no accident that no serious-minded case has ever been made against North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as wrong for the country on a fundamental basis. There is no such case. In the almost 50 years since World War II, the United States, at times almost single-handedly, has pushed the world into an unparalleled period of prosperity through freer trade among nations. NAFTA is one of the great achievements of America's long march to free trade.
