ABSTRACT

For exploring the function of the descent into hell in the theologies of Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar, the interrelation between the descent into hell and the doctrine of the Trinity proves to be most productive and instructive. This chapter examines both the function of the Trinity as the ground for the descent into hell and the effect of the descent into hell on the Trinitarian life of God. Jurgen Moltmann's reflection on the descent into hell and his construction of a doctrine of the Trinity as based on the particularity of Jesus Christ's abandonment on the cross share many important elements with Barth and Balthasar. The chapter also examines the distinguishing features of Moltmann's and Barth's respective theological interpretation of Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane. It addresses Alan Lewis' constructive exploration of the descent into hell, published posthumously as Between Cross and Resurrection: A Theology of Holy Saturday.
