ABSTRACT

This chapter asserts the exit exam as a method of direct assessment. The exit exam is designed to measure learning. Exit exams are most utilized at the elementary and secondary levels. Given the lack of nationally normed exams in the area of mass communication, any department that decides to use an exit exam as a measure of direct assessment will have to create one. The number of full-time faculty will play a role in determining whether to use an exit exam or some other form of direct student outcome measurement. Assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning and development. Objective exams, oral exams, performance assessments, surveys, and a capstone experience are all direct measures of student outcomes. Grammar tests are used by journalism programs for entry into basic news writing.
