ABSTRACT

This chapter provides insight into an increasingly popular way to find out, as Jeremy Cohen put it, "What our curriculum and pedagogy is accomplishing", and "What we can do as professional educators to increase student success". Educators employ portfolios according to their assessment objectives. Examination of portfolio contents produced for campus media or on the internship for utilization of aesthetic, communication, and ethical principles and theories displays a student's practical understanding. On many campuses, portfolio assessment has generated a positive qualitative ripple effect. The use of the portfolio of a student's work produced in classes, campus media, and especially on the job as an intern, helps to holistically evaluate a student's ability to produce media products and conduct research into issues in mass media. As valuable as portfolios are to assessment in a professional media program, it is important to note that it is not enough to rely completely on portfolio evaluation.
