ABSTRACT

KP: In 1990, in the course of a perhaps doomed attempt to relate your then current activities to postmodernist concerns, I suggested that your 1988 solo violin piece, Del Cuarto Elemento, ‘gives the impression of confronting the whole “violin tradition” both “classical” and “popular” ’. 1 But I at least felt that we might agree on this particular ‘postmodernist’ point, since you were willing to admit to ‘trying quite deliberately to engage the violin, in this case, on its own terms in some quite vital sense’.
