D o m e n i c o t r a n s f o r m e d b o t h t h i n g s a n d t h e i l l u s i o n o f t h i n g s i n t o p o e t i c figures. T h e p r e s e n c e o f a n u n a v o i d a b l y s o l i d y e t v a p o r o u s l y r e f l e c t i v e o b j e c t at t h e c e n t e r o f t h e p a i n t i n g w o u l d h a v e b e e n a t o n c e af i g u r a t i v e a n d ap i c t o r i a l d e v i c e : a n a s s e r t i o n as w e l l as i n v e r s i o n o f t h e n a t u r e o f t r u t h a n d t h e v i e w e r ' s r e l a t i o n s h i p t o it. S u c h an o b j e c t w o u l d h a v e f u n c t i o n e d a s b o t h am i r r o r r e f l e c t i n g p h y s i c a l t h i n g s a n d aw i n d o w i l l u m i n a t i n g s p i r i t u a l o n e s .
