ABSTRACT
A m o n g m e d i e v a l a n d R e n a i s s a n c e a s t r o l o g i c a l d e p i c t i o n s , r e n d e r i n g s o f t h e P l a n e t s ' C h i l d r e n m a y o f t e n b e r e a d as c o m i c - b o o k n a r r a t i v e s a b o u t t h e influences t h a t the s e v e n p l a n e t s e x e r c i s e o v e r t h e sub l u n a r w o r l d . S o m e lavish v e r s i o n s o f such d e p i c t i o n s w e r e m a d e i n t o e a r l y g e n r e s c e n e s a n d c o u l d be r e a d as ah i s t o r y lesson. A m o n g v a r i o u s s e r i e s o f t h e P l a n e t s ' C h i l d r e n , d e p i c t i o n s i n c l u d e d in t h e l a t e - f i f t e e n t h - c e n t u r y Wolfegg H o u s e b o o k s t a n d o u t on s e v e r a l g r o u n d s . R a t h e r t h a n b e i n g s t y l i z e d a n d g e n e r a l i z e d a l l e g o r i e s o f p l a n e t a r y a t t r i b u t e s , t h e p r o t a g o n i s t s h e r e i n t e r a c t w i t h e a c h other, and s o m e o f t h e m c a n b e r e c o g n i z e d in s e v e r a l c o n s e c u t i v e i m a g e s . I n s t e a d o f b e i n g s i t u a t e d in an e u t r a l a n d u n i v e r s a l s e t t i n g , t h e c h a r a c t e r s a r e p l a c e d in i n d i v i d u a l i z e d a n d r e a l i s t i c s u r r o u n d i n g s . T h i s p r e s u m e d r e a l i s m w a s o f t e n u n d e r s t o o d as t h e a r t i s t ' s a t t e m p t to be as o r t o f v i s u a l n e w s m a n c o n c e r n e d w i t h c o n t e m p o r y life, a n d t h e s e i m a g e s h a v e b e e n u s e d s i n c e t h e l a t e 19th c e n t u r y as i l l u s t r a t i o n s in b o o k s on s u b j e c t s r a n g i n g from m e d i e v a l a s t r o l o g y to h i s t o r y a n d fashion. T h i s is w h y t h e s e i m a g e s , to s o m e e x t e n t , s h a p e d n o t o n l y o u r c o n c e p t s a b o u t t h e m e d i e v a l n o t i o n o f the a s t r o l o g i c a l i n f l u e n c e s o f t h e p l a n e t s , b u t a l s o t h o s e o f v a r i o u s a s p e c t s o f t h e f i f t e e n t h - c e n t u r y n o r t h - G e r m a n r u r a l a n d c o u r t l y l i f e s t y l e s .
