ABSTRACT
R e c e n t r e c o n s i d e r a t i o n s o f e a r l y m o d e r n E u r o p e a n c u l t u r e h a v e r e - e m p h a s i z e d n o t o n l y its c o l o n i a l a n d e t h n o c e n t r i c i m p u l s e s , b u t i t s s t r i k i n g m a t e r i a l i s m . With t h e s p r e a d o f p r i n t c u l t u r e , w i t h t h e r e t u r n to E u r o p e o f m e r c h a n t s h i p s l a d e n w i t h p r e c i o u s c o m m o d i t i e s from t h e e n d s o f t h e e a r t h , a n d w i t h t h e r a p i d d e v e l o p m e n t o f n e w t e c h n i q u e s o f fine c r a f t s m a n s h i p , t h e d e m a n d for w o r l d l y g o o d s h a d n e v e r b e e n greater. B u t t h e s e p l e a s u r e s q u i c k l y p a s s e d , w h e t h e r i n t h e s p l e n d o r o f am a s q u e o r a m o n g t h e w o n d e r s o f ac a b i n e t o f c u r i o s i t i e s .
