ABSTRACT

Within this project, we have adopted three principal techniques to explore the chronology of AngloSaxon graves and the artefact assemblages which they contain. Reviewed and revised typological schemes for the principal artefact-types in the relevant Anglo-Saxon graves have been described in Chapter 5 (cf. also Section 1.2). This chapter presents the results of the correspondence analysis, our chosen method for the seriation of graveassemblages (cf. Section 2.3) and the radiocarbon dating programme (cf. Section 2.2). Those separate strands of evidence are combined using Bayesian statistical modelling (introduced in Section 2.4) in order to provide formal estimates for the chronology of the male graves.
