ABSTRACT

The leading papers of that nation from which we had reason to expect better things than calumny and detraction, have announced the proclamation of this day of thanksgiving, with a self-righteous sneer. They devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers! They insinuate a hardness of heart, a cold-blooded, callous indifference to the suffering that is about us on every side. Let each one send up his own song of praise, and the private thanksgiving of the many shall join in holy accord, and roll up a deep and swelling anthem of grateful joy before the throne of God. We thank God for the harvest of the fruits of the earth. The merciful God saw that this nation could not be truly one, in all its interests and sympathies and feelings, while this great and high wall of separation stood among them. Under the guidance of God, the Government has accepted the issue thus made by rebellion.
